Kon Tum: Promote sustainable coffee production
Sustainable agricultural transformation, also known as VnSAT Project, has been implemented in our province since years 2016 with the aim of orientating and supporting people to implement sustainable coffee production. By 5 year of implementation, The project has contributed to changing perceptions and promoting production of coffee growers towards sustainable farming, reduce the impact on the environment.
Mr. Tran Van Chuong- Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Kon Tum province said: The implementation of a sustainable agricultural transformation program aimed at bringing about a positive change in farmers' thinking and production methods.. In our province, The project has been implemented since year 2016 locality 17 commune of 3 the district is Dak Ha, Dak Glei and Kon Plong with many content such as: Training, technical guidance for sustainable coffee cultivation; support the cost of installing water saving technology; infrastructure support (traffic road, drying yard, storehouse, machines, device) for cooperatives, cooperation group. 5 last year, The project has been promoting positive results, contribute to restructuring agricultural production, especially increasing the competitiveness of coffee products and farmers' income.
According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, 5 last year, VnSAT project has supported training, training to improve knowledge, sustainable coffee production techniques for more 4.500 households with a total area of newly planted and replanting coffee over 4,126ha; Support for installation of economical watering technology 40 households of Binh Minh Sustainable Coffee Production Cooperative (Ha Mon commune) and Dak Long Associate Cooperation Group (Dak Long commune) of Dak Ha district. The project also supports a number of cooperatives in upgrading inland roads, construction of drying yard, warehouse and equipment, machinery is necessary to modernize production and have conditions to improve production and business efficiency. Especially, from year 2019 now, Construction assistance projects 3 standard coffee nursery to serve the needs of replanting and new planting of the people inside and outside the project area.
With the support of the VNSAT Project, the years, Sau Nhung Agricultural Production and Trade Cooperative (Dak Ha district) have boldly contributed counterpart capital to deploy the installation of economical watering technology. Hence, The cooperative has significantly reduced production costs, increase coffee yield, bring higher income for members.
Mr. Nguyen Tri Sau – Chairman of the Board, Calculation Cooperative Director: The application of advanced irrigation technology helps to reduce the amount of water for irrigation approximately 30% compared with traditional irrigation methods. This is one of the important solutions to cope with the shortage of irrigation water, at the same time, Economical irrigation also helps to reduce the amount of fertilizer, reduce work as well as electricity bill, irrigation pump oil.
Mr. Doan Van Chuong – Leader of Binh Minh Cooperative Group (Ha Mon commune, Dak Ha district) share: Before, People often cultivate coffee based on their experience, learning from each other should sometimes water too much, Applying a lot of inorganic fertilizers leads to a large investment cost without increasing the yield of the orchard. Since joining the project, The members of the Cooperative have understood and correctly applied the sustainable production process, watering at the right time, required amount, balance between inorganic and organic fertilizers, Biological insecticide spray, collecting coffee with a high rate of ripe fruit ... Comparison across production crops, we see, from adopting new production methods, profit increased 15 – 20% compared to before.
Not only knowledge in production, Coffee processing; 5 last year, The VNSAT project also conducts many training activities, training to improve management capacity, Activities for cooperatives, cooperation and encouragement groups, Support farmers to strengthen links with businesses, cooperatives to develop the coffee value chain in a sustainable way.
According to Mr. Tran Van Chuong, with the positive results that the program of sustainable agricultural transformation has brought about in recent years, The Government has decided to extend the project implementation time to the end of the month 6/2022. "Next time, along with continuing training to equip growers with essential knowledge about sustainable coffee production, We will focus on supporting businesses, Cooperative, cooperation groups to improve production capacity, process, preserving coffee. Especially, We will be focusing more deeply on instruction, support building link value chains, trade promotion to bring commodity products to market. The cost for implementation is estimated at approx 100 billions dong"- Mr. Tran Van Chuong said.
